I discovered James Joyce a few years back, when "Eveline," "Araby," and "The Dead" showed up on one of my syllabuses. What immediately struck me was Joyce's ability to relay such powerful themes and messages with simple plot lines. "Eveline" has haunted me since I first read it, it's still one of my favourite short stories. I'll have to check out your other recommendations!
