What is matcha tea and how is it made?

Matcha tea is a powdered green tea essential to Japanese culture. It is served at the Japanese tea ceremony along with the confectionery sweet wagashi (和菓子). What differentiates matcha from other green teas is the process by which it is made. Young tea leaves are ground into a powder, and the powder is then whisked into a hot water. Unlike other green teas in which the leaves are steeped in hot water, matcha is one of the few teas in which the leaves are actually consumed. This allows the drinker to ingest a greater amount of the leaves’ nutrients.
